Quick answer
Photomath (owned by Google) reads a printed or handwritten problem from a photo and shows a worked solution with explained steps; free for solutions, Plus from $9.99 a month adds animated tutorials. Khanmigo (Khan Academy) is a tutor built on GPT models that asks guiding questions instead of giving answers, across maths and other subjects; free for teachers, $4 a month for families. Photomath checks homework; Khanmigo teaches it.
Both are excellent, and they are built on opposite philosophies. The choice depends on an honest answer to one question: does the student need to understand this, or just get it done tonight?
Photomath: the answer, with the steps
Point the camera at an equation and Photomath returns the solution and every step, often with more than one method. Recognition of handwriting is impressive and coverage runs from arithmetic to calculus and statistics. The free tier gives solutions; Plus adds animated walkthroughs and deeper explanations. Its weakness is word problems, and its risk is that it is a superb answer machine for a student who does not want to think.
Khanmigo: the tutor that will not tell you
Khanmigo is designed to refuse. Ask for the answer and it asks what you have tried, hints at the next step, and checks your reasoning. It is tied into Khan Academy's exercises and videos, so it can point to the lesson that covers what you are stuck on. For a student who is willing to engage, it is closer to a patient human tutor than anything else available at the price. For a student who is not, it is frustrating by design.
