What is Ollama?

Ollama is a free, open-source tool for running open-weight language models (Llama, Qwen, DeepSeek, Gemma, Mistral and hundreds more) locally on a Mac, Windows or Linux machine. One terminal command downloads and runs a model; a local API lets other apps use it. Nothing leaves your computer.

Key features

  • One-command install and run for hundreds of open-weight models
  • OpenAI-compatible local API for apps and coding tools
  • Runs fully offline — no data leaves the machine
  • Model library with quantised variants for smaller GPUs
  • Works with Continue, Open WebUI, and most local-AI front ends

Pros

  • Completely free and private — the model runs on your hardware
  • The easiest local setup available; genuinely one command
  • Huge model library, updated within days of new open releases

Cons

  • Quality depends on your hardware — small models on a laptop are far below frontier cloud models
  • Command-line first; the built-in chat UI is minimal
  • Large models need 16–64 GB of RAM or a serious GPU
