AI Wrapper in plain English.
Also known as: GPT wrapper, thin wrapper, wrapper startup
The one-sentence version
A product built mostly on someone else's AI model, adding a specific interface or workflow rather than new underlying technology.
An AI wrapper is a product whose core intelligence comes from a third-party model — GPT, Claude, Gemini — with the company's own work concentrated in the interface, the workflow, the data it brings, and the audience it serves. The term started as an insult ("just a GPT wrapper") implying no defensible technology, but the market has been more forgiving than the critics: many of the most-used AI products for writing, sales, support, and legal work are wrappers with excellent distribution and domain focus. The real risks are margin (every request costs money paid to the model provider), platform dependence (a pricing or policy change upstream hits you directly), and competition from the model provider itself adding your feature. Wrappers that survive tend to own proprietary data, deep integrations, or a workflow that would be painful to rebuild.
